This will be Master Penman Barbara Calzolari's first broaden workshop at Kalo Make Art! Gothicized Italic is a gorgeous, stylized blackletter style of calligraphy. Very different than pointed pen, and strikingly bold and confident when written by an accomplished talent. And Barbara is not only well versed in this hand, but she breathes life into it fully!
Barbara will introduce us to the precision hand movements, visual spacing, and measure proportions of blackletter and Gothicized Italic — Its capital letterforms can begin simple and bold, but have great potential to be dramatic, embellished and play center stage on the page.
Gothicized Italic was developed by British/Uruguayan calligrapher,Edward Johnston’s last major manuscript hand, developed in 1924, was a compressed Foundational characterized by a rich, dense texture quite similar to a Gothic Textura. The name Gothicized Italic is, however, somewhat misleading, because the forms themselves bear little, if any, affinity to Italian Renaissance styles. Yet because of its compressed, pointed character, and when written on a slight slope, it does take on something of the lively rhythm of Italic, culminating in an evocative, often sumptuous style of writing. It is most effective for wedding invitations, formal documents, and some poetry.
This class is open to both beginners and advanced calligraphers alike.
